Electric bicycle, also known as
an e-bike, power bike or booster bike, is
a bicycle with an integrated electric motor, which can be used
for propulsion. Electric bikes of many kinds are available in the
market, from bikes that only have a small motor to assist the rider's
pedal-power to more powerful e-bikes which tend closer to moped-style
functionality: however, all electric bikes retain the ability to
be pedaled by the rider.
Electrical bikes
use rechargeable batteries to run and can travel up to 25 to
32 km/h (16 to 20 mph) while the more high-powered variants can often
go up to the limit of 45 km/h (28 mph). In some markets, such as
Germany, E-bikes have gained huge popularity and are now taking the market
share away from conventional bicycles, while in others, such as China;
mopeds and small motorcycles are being replaced.
Depending on local laws, many e-bikes
are legally classified as bicycles rather than mopeds or motorcycles.
This exempts them from the more stringent laws regarding the certification and
operation of more powerful two-wheelers, which are often classed
as electric motorcycles. E-bikes can also be defined separately and
treated under distinct Electric bicycle laws.
These Bikes
are zero-emission vehicles, as they emit no combustion by-products. E-bikes
are claimed to have a significantly lower environmental impact than
conventional automobiles and are generally seen as environmentally
desirable. Even the environmental effects involved in recharging the batteries
of an e-bike is less compared to hefty power some batteries of any other
vehicle.
The small size of the battery pack on
an e-bikemakes them a good candidate for charging via solar power or
other renewable energy resources.
The first pedal-assisted bicycles
appeared in India in 1993. In 2008, E-bikes were introduced and soon the market
for electric bikes in India became huge, which compelled the companies to come
up with new market plans for the Indian customers, providing the customers with
relatively faster and technology-oriented e-bikes.
While the electric bikes market in
India is still growing, there are many e-bikes which have already established
themselves as the most desired electric bikes in India.
